Culinary Institute of the South opens eateries

A pair of eateries that “provide real-world experiences” for students at the Culinary Institute of the South recently opened at Buckwalter Place, school officials said.

The Clist Café and The Bistro are located on the first floor of the new Technical College of the Lowcountry culinary school at 1 Venture Dr., in Bluffton.

“Meals and drinks at both eateries are prepared and served by students enrolled in the school’s culinary, baking and hospitality programs,” a news release said.

TCL said The Clist Café “offers a variety of ‘grab-and-go’ items for sale including breads, pastries, soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps along with coffee and tea.” Named for longtime TCL supporters Liz and Todd Clist, it is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

At The Bistro, visitors can experience a “gourmet, three-course meal,” the school said. “Recent dishes include shrimp and grits, herb-crusted pork tenderloin with wild rice, and steak with pommes frites.”

The Bistro is open for lunch, which costs $25 per person, on Wednesdays and Thursdays through February by reservation only. The release said its “menu and hours of operation change throughout the year.”

TCL opened the 30,000-square-foot institute in November. Later this year, it plans to open the FOODseum, which it describes as “an interactive museum that will tell the story of Southern food.”

The school said the $15.3 million institute “was funded with $11.2 million from Beaufort County, Beaufort County School District and the Town of Bluffton; $3.5 million from the state of South Carolina and $625,000 raised from private sources and donors.”
