Golf outing raises more than $32K for May River college scholarships

The Hit ‘Em Fore Herman Golf Outing raised more than $32,000 for the Herman Fuqua Scholarship Fund on Oct. 15.

The scholarship fund awards college scholarships to student-athletes in their senior year at May River High School.

The event hosted 124 golfers from across Bluffton at The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes. It was followed by a reception at Hampton Lake for more than 200 attendees.

Members of May River’s girls golf team took part in the event, finishing in second place. The Sharks, who won the SCHSL Class AAAA Lower State title Oct. 18, were set to compete in the state championship tournament Oct. 25-26 in Florence.

The fundraiser was established by residents of Hampton Lake to honor Herman Fuqua, the neighborhood’s beloved bartender and an avid sports fan, who passed away in 2020.

The charity golf outing will be played each year to fund up to four scholarships to male and female May River student-athletes who maintain high academic standards and demonstrate leadership on and off the field.
