The Kehoe House

The Kehoe House is Savannah’s most famous historic home. The Queen Anne brick home was constructed in 1893 as a single-family residence by Dewitt Bruyn. It was designed for William Kehoe (a local foundry worker). This dark red brick home features Corinthian columns and bay windows under a parapet. It also has single, double, and triple windows. A truncated tower and variegated roofline are some of the other highlights. Tourists are often shocked to discover that Kehoe used cast metal for exterior trim.
William Kehoe, a ten-year-old boy from Wexford County in Ireland, left Ireland with his family to arrive in Savannah. Kehoe, who was an apprentice iron molder, later owned a successful iron foundry. William and Annie had ten children and built this impressive house to accommodate them.
For most of the 20th century, the Kehoe House was used as a mortuary. Sometime along the way, it became a private residence. In 1980, famed football player Joe Namath bought Kehoe House for $80,000. Joe thought for a time about turning Kehoe House into a nightclub and disco, much to the horror of his Columbia Square neighbors. He changed his mind but held onto the home, fixed up the place until he sold it in 1989, for $530,000!
In the late 1990s, William Kehoe House was restored to its former glory and opened as a historic inn with period furnishings. In 2003, another restoration brought new amenities and decor to the property. The original home has twelve “bedchambers”, and the townhouse across the courtyard offers one and two bedrooms. These spacious rooms were named after prominent figures in the area’s past, including Juliette Gordon Low and Tomo-chichi Oglethorpe. Each room has a unique character that explains why it is named.
The Kehoe House is known for being one of Savannah’s most elegant inns and is an ideal choice for a romantic getaway or wedding.

#SCADMOA “The lantern rings are meant to hang from the hand during prayer or meditation. They are not outright narratives, though they suggest a quietude that is, at its essence, personal. The lanterns recur in the shape of a lotus, a flower with both ceremonial and decorative functions. These rings suggest a moment of thought where stillness, beauty, and illustration can peacefully coexist.” – Jay Song, chair of SCAD jewelry
Song’s works are now on view in “Ring Redux” at #SCADMOA through Jan. 30. #RingRedux
