Savannah’s Roller Derby Devils
It is hard to believe that roller derby, the underground women’s contact sport and on-again-off-again activity for women, has been around since at least the early 1900s. It started as banked track racing with teams competing in “Transcontinental Roller Derby” marathons of 3,000 miles. After World War II, it returned in an aggressive, more over-the-top form in the 1940s. With loosely scripted stories and an emphasis on theatrics rather than athletics, think professional wrestling on small wheels. Roller derby was almost extinct by the end of the 1970s. However, grassroots efforts helped to revive it in the 2000s. Savannah was eager to join the fun, as there were suddenly many leagues and teams across the country. Heather Hamilton Watson, a roller derby legend known as Ms. Dfiant invited women to Star Castle Family Entertainment Center in 2006 to form a team. Many of the people who came had not skated in many years and no one had ever seen a real derby. But it was like an underdog sports movie. The Savannah Derby Devils were born.
The Derby Devils were full members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association by 2014. They had assembled a dedicated, hard-working, and talented team of women. Modern roller derby has gotten rid of the giddy antics and is now considered a legitimate sport. There have been attempts to get it into the Olympics. However, the “jammers and “blockers”, who still have their wild names and colorful personalities, are still respected. The Savannah Derby Devils are a source of inspiration for young Savannah girls and women, much like superheroes. The Savannah Jr. Derbytaunts is a league for little sisters aged eight to seventeen.
