My next chapter…

You might have noticed I haven’t sent a newsletter in over a week. I sent the last newsletter announcing my temporary absence but was told it wasn’t sent out – my mistake. Unfortunately, being a solo entrepreneur, I am without additional journalist help to cover me. Once I obtain more subscribers, I will be adding sponsored content and some limited advertising, enabling the ability to afford a freelance journalist or two.
Anyway, I want to take this opportunity to write about the reason for my absence. I just returned from a trip to our 50th state ( Hawaii, to readers who slept through American history in grade school). The reason for this trip was to meet my biological siblings for the first time. I was adopted 2 weeks after I was born. I was never curious about my birth mother or my biological father growing up. In my adult years, my curiosity grew and with my mother’s help, we reached out on the internet. I eventually sent my spit to ancestry.com providing my DNA and received a list of possible distant relatives. Years go by, and in May 2020, I received an email from someone who found me on ancestry.com and suggested we might be a match. So, we scheduled a phone call for the following day.
I called the next day and a woman named Michelle answered the phone. We introduced ourselves and then I heard: “I think we are half-siblings …and we shared the same mother”.
After an awkward silence followed by my stuttering and loss of words, I realized this is a real possibility. She also mentioned I have two other siblings. I have 3 half-sisters I didn’t know existed in my 61 years on this planet. Talk about shock and surprise, The mix of emotions over the next several days was like riding a rollercoaster.
We eventually had a zoom call or facetime, I think. I provided a copy of my adoption papers with the name of their mother on the form. Quoting my new sisters: “This is surreal”.
As Covid-19 was starting to peak during that time, we decided to hold off on meeting in person for a while. Well, that time finally happened last week. It was one of the most special moments in my life. To get to know my sisters in person and hear all the family stories and history was so exhilarating, to say the least. The amount of love I feel and share with them is unmeasurable. I wanted the week to last forever. And being in Maui, Hawaii wasn’t bad either.
I am so looking forward to the future get-togethers we will have in store. I am beyond thrilled that I can experience this new chapter in my life with my sisters and their families.
