Historic Savannah Society‘s beginning

Savannah is distinct among American cities. It is praised for its innovative Oglethorpe Town Plan, which is remarkably intact, the downtown area is dotted with beautiful squares adorned by a wealth of 18th, 19th, and early 20th century buildings. Savannah has one of the biggest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, but this Landmark District is only the beginning of the iceberg. There are over 12 historic districts that are scattered throughout the county and city and each has distinct character and appeal. However, it wasn’t always this way.
A half-century of decline in the economy– because of the automobile-oriented suburbs that developed after World War II led to the decline of downtown. In the late 1950s, a lot of downtown was drowning in disinvestment and degeneration. The buildings were abandoned and blighted and crime was high. residents fled towards the southside and there was next to no tourism. The year 1954 saw the demolishment of the adored City Market on Ellis Square to create a parking garage became the catalyst for the emergence of a preservation movement. In the year following there was another major threat that a funeral home was scheduled to buy the historic c.1820 Isaiah Davenport House to take it down to create the construction of a parking lot on the surface.

Local artist, journalist, and activist Anna Colquitt Hunter gathered six of her fellow activists to stop the demolition and created the Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF). Seven ladies inspired by Hunter’s ideas and the collective determination and connections, bought the property for $22,500. The initial plan to save a house transformed into a unified movement that eventually helped save the entire city.
HSF has grown to become one of the best well-known local preservation groups in the United States, with a focus on not only the preservation of buildings that are historic but also the redevelopment of abandoned neighborhoods.
