What will we do with the Civic Center?
Keep the theatre, demolish the arena, add an office building
- Savannah city officials unveiled their plan for the Savannah Civic Center site’s future
- The plan calls for the restoration of six lost city blocks, a fully restored Orleans Square, a renovated Johnny Mercer Theater, and a new city of Savannah office building on Oglethorpe Avenue
- City Manager Jay Melder told the council that the Johnny Mercer Theatre remains a viable and unique use for the city, but there is still work to be done
- Another office building could be constructed on the lot to the north of the Civic Center complex
