Jasper County School District seeks input about possible year-round school

The Jasper County School District said it is seeking input from parents, guardians and stakeholders about the possibility of year-round school.

In a Jan. 24 letter, superintendent Rechel Anderson explained the district is considering transitioning from a traditional academic calendar to a year-round, modified one.

“Covid-19 has disrupted our instructional program(s) over the past couple of years, and we have experienced an immense educational loss,” Anderson said in the letter. “While we have worked diligently to provide the needed instruction, academic interventions, free 24/7 academic tutoring, before/afterschool programs, and additional resources, we firmly believe we should consider a different approach.”

The letter said the district would seek feedback beginning Feb. 2 with a virtual information meeting. A survey also will be available.

Anderson said year-round schooling would provide a more consistent schedule of structured balance when students are in and out of school.

“It is similar in required days,” she said in the letter. “A traditional calendar and a year-round modified calendar require students to attend school 180 school days during the year, and teachers work 190 days a year.”

Anderson said a modified year-round calendar would allow for a break after nine weeks.

“There would be a two-week break for staff and students, occasionally called an intermission,” she said. “This break or intermission provides additional opportunities for more intense academic support and/or enrichment.”

The letter said state law gives local school boards the authority to establish an annual calendar for teachers, staff and students with a minimum of 180 instructional days.

The next virtual information meeting will be Feb. 9, with a proposed calendar  presented to the school board.
