3 takeaways from ABC ’20/20′ special on the Murdaugh family crime saga

If you missed the two-hour ABC “20/20” special on the Murdaugh crime saga in South Carolina, which aired Friday night at 9 p.m., don’t fret — you’ve got another chance to watch it on Hulu, starting Saturday.

Even as state police investigate the unsolved deaths of his wife and younger son, suspended S.C. attorney Richard “Alex” Murdaugh is facing 51 criminal charges, seven lawsuits, and has connections to two more deaths and a fatal boat crash in a series of alleged schemes that threaten to bring down other attorneys and may entangle at least two local bankers.

The spiraling downfall of Murdaugh, along with tales of crimes both allegedly solved and unsolved, has captured the attention of people around the world. Other major television networks have covered it, and it is the subject of more than one documentary to come.

So why tune in to watch ABC’s take on on this crime story? Here are three key reasons:

The Murdaugh family’s story is rapidly changing

This is a rapidly changing, developing, and unraveling story. New events and developments are constantly emerging — from new charges to new lawsuits — and what you saw or read last week could be old news when the news breaks tomorrow.

During this show, we also hear two new members of the Murdaugh family address specific allegations and crimes that have already been brought to light — but never publicly addressed by the family.

Hear more from the journalists on the ground

Friday’s episode spent a great deal of time sharing facts and commentary from several of the journalists closest to the story, including one writer who grew up in the same hometown with the Murdaughs — and their alleged victims — and knows all the key players in this saga: The Hampton County Guardian Editor Michael M. DeWitt, Jr.

During Friday’s true-crime program, DeWitt shares his original reporting from “ground zero” of the crime saga and home of the Murdaugh family — Hampton County, S.C.

DeWitt has covered the Murdaugh family for his entire career and reported on this saga since 2015. Guardian editors have covered the Murdaugh family — both accolades and accusations — since 1879. During the broadcast, and with a live blog online during the airing, DeWitt shares his personal knowledge, insights and facts from the unique perspective of his reporting.

Victims bring tragedy close to home, exclusive interviews from Murdaughs

Finally, and most importantly, the episode features exclusive new interviews with members of the Murdaugh family, as well as many of Murdaugh’s alleged victims, some who are speaking out for the first time.

While, to many, these victims are just names in a newspaper, this episode helps put the viewer in connection with the victims and their grieving families. Seeing their faces, hearing their loves ones speak so emotionally about their tragic losses, reminds us all that evil is real and every type of crime, from financial crimes to accidental, alcohol-fueled accidents, have consequences and can wreck people’s lives.

That alone, makes this episode worth watching, even as these victims and their communities await answers, resolution and justice.
