Lowcountry police offer tips to remain safe over the holidays

The Hardeeville Police Department, which has been investigating a rash of car break-ins, said it wants to remind the public of the importance of keeping safe over the holidays.

“We have noticed an increase in larcenies,” Police Chief Sam Woodward said. “It is important for citizens to lock their cars, making sure valuables cannot be seen. It is also important, if they can do so, to have them place their valuables in the trunk and lock them up.”

Woodward said it is important that people do not shop alone, if possible. He said shoppers should also park in well-lit areas, parking as close as possible to the store.

“Everyone should be aware of their surroundings,” he said. “If someone feels uncomfortable while out shopping, they can call the police. We want citizens to contact law enforcement if they feel unsafe.”

Last year during the holiday season, Woodward said Hardeeville saw a 40 percent increase in the number of break-ins. He said thieves go around the area and look for unlocked cars, also looking in the windows for valuables.

“Lock your doors, set your car’s alarm, and always be aware of your surroundings,” he said. “We want citizens to be safe this holiday season.”

Woodward said his department has also increased patrols during the holidays to help reduce the crimes that seem to increase during this time of year.

Meanwhile, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said it will be conducting DUI enforcement during the 2021-22 Christmas and New Year’s Day Sober or Slammer Campaign.

The campaign was scheduled to begin Dec. 17 and continue until Jan. 1. The sheriff’s office is partnering with the S.C. Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies throughout the state to combat impaired driving and help reduce the number of DUI-related accidents and deaths.
