Renovated Bluffton Branch Library to reopen Jan. 4

Beaufort County will celebrate its completed renovation of the Bluffton Branch Library next month.

The county’s library system said it invites the community to a ribbon-cutting and reopening at 9 a.m. Jan. 4 at the facility located at 120 Palmetto Way in Bluffton Village.

The Bluffton Branch Library is undergoing a major renovation.

“The branch opened in 2002 and has witnessed enormous community growth since then,” according to the library system. “The renovations were designed as a response to usage, community feedback, focus groups, and surveys.”

Renovations began last spring on about 60% of the library. The work includes new furniture, flooring, paint, community meeting rooms and “enhanced spaces for children, teens, and adults,” the library system said.

“The Children’s Area will be relocated, expanded, and enclosed. A new large programming room will be dedicated fully to children’s programming,” according to the system’s website. “The main fiction section for adults will assume the space of the former Children’s Area. The Teen Area will be relocated and enhanced. Community meeting rooms will be created from previously open spaces.”

The system has had a temporary “pop-up” library in the building’s entryway and large meeting room during the renovations. It will be closed Jan. 3 as officials prepare for the reopening.

In another response to Bluffton’s growth, earlier this year a Beaufort County Council committee approved plans to consider a location for an additional library branch.

The committee approved spending no more than $30,000 to assess a possible site in the New Riverside area. At the time, county officials said work on a new branch could begin as early as 2022.
