Holiday events scheduled around Jasper County

Several holiday events are scheduled around Jasper County this month.

The sights and sounds of Christmas will soon be on display in the streets of downtown Ridgeland as the town hosts its Christmas on Main event Dec. 20.

This year, the town will host a golf cart parade rather than a regular parade. The event will be held downtown from 6-8 p.m. The parade will line up on Railroad Avenue and travel down Main Street and back.

“The town wanted to do something different this year,” town clerk Penny Daley said.

Santa will make an appearance and children will have the chance to have their photo taken with him. Children will also have the chance to make a picture frame for their photo. Refreshments will be served.

Another highlight will be a Christmas train for the children. There will be entertainment and several downtown businesses, including Fiddler’s and Eats & Sweets, will be open.

There is a large holiday light display at the Blue Heron Nature Center in Ridgeland each night, which is free and open to the public. The display is located at 321 Bailey Lane.

The Brendlen family’s Lowcountry Christmas Lights Display has also gotten underway.

Each year, the Brendlens invite the public to take a drive through their property to view the lights. They hope those who visit will donate to help families of four Jasper County firefighters who have died over the last two years: Brian Mixson, Andy Orphanoudakis, Chad Atwood and Coleman “Coley” Loadholt.

The lights are on display nightly from 6-10 p.m. until Dec. 31 at 1570 Driggers Lane, weather-permitting.

Wreaths Across America will host ceremonies Dec. 18 at 9 a.m. at Grahamville Cemetery, 10 a.m. at Old Sardis Cemetery, noon at Ridgeland Cemetery, and 3 p.m. at Grimes Cemetery. Dec. 19 ceremonies will take place after church services at Gillisonville Baptist Church and Great Swamp Baptist Church.

Ridgeland’s Wreaths Across America coordinator Mary Berry said all of the ceremonies will follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Hardeeville held its tree lighting ceremony, complete with a visit from Santa, on Dec. 1. The city will host a Wreaths Across America event at noon Dec. 18.

Wreaths Across America’s Hardeeville chapter, in partnership with the city’s parks, recreation and tourism department, will host its second annual service at City Hall, 205 Main St.

Volunteers are needed to help place wreaths. Contact Stephen Talbot at 843-208-2658, or the recreation department at 843-227-4089 or recre8hardeevillesc.gov.

Hardeeville’s recreation department is hosting its annual Santa’s Toy Box drive. People can drop off a new unwrapped toy for children ages 4-12 through Dec. 10 at City Hall and the Hardeeville Recreation Center, 285 John Smith Rd.

A new toy drive is being organized by members of the Levy Fire Department. Donations of toys, clothes and gift cards are being accepted, as well as cash donations with receipts. Organizers are seeking volunteers to help with the project. Contact Crystal Saxon at 843-338-4908.
