Lowcountry Hanukkah car parade, menorah lighting scheduled for Dec. 5

Chabad of Greater Hilton Head will host its third annual Grand Car Menorah Parade as part of a local Hanukkah celebration.

The parade will begin in Bluffton at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at Tanger Outlets 2. The route will travel down U.S. 278 to Shelter Cove Towne Center on Hilton Head Island before a menorah lighting at 5 p.m.

“Chabad of Greater Hilton Head will ignite a public 9-foot Hanukkah menorah erected at Shelter Cove Towne Center, followed by a community-wide celebration on December 5, the Last night of the Chanukah,” a news release said.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be followed by live music, singing, entertainment and traditional foods.

“The menorah serves as a symbol of Hilton Head’s dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship G-d freely, openly, and with pride,” Rabbi Mendel Hertz said. “This is true especially in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her religion free from restraint and persecution.”

“The message of Chanukah is the message of light,” Hertz said. “The nature of light is that it is always victorious over darkness. A small amount of light dispels a lot of darkness and hastens the coming of Moshiach. Another act of goodness and kindness, another act of light, can make all the difference.”
