SCCPSS To Launch Multi-Media Driver Recruitment Campaign

Savannah-Chatham County Public School System needs bus drivers.  Like many districts across the country, SCCPSS is responding to a driver shortage.

For years, school districts all over have been dealing with a bus driver shortage. Tammy Perkins, Lead Transportation Director for the district, said the applicant pool has been shrinking for the past 5 years but with the impacts of the pandemic, we have seen some of the worst numbers in recent history. Since the pandemic last year, Perkins said the District is down about 60 drivers from full starting capacity.

“Transporting our students safely and efficiently is our highest priority,” said Perkins.  “We have over 400 busses but only half that many drivers.  We need to increase our applicant pool so we are pulling out all the stops to reach current CDL holders as well as those who are in training or who would like to become licensed.”

With the district returning to in person instruction five days a week for the 2021/2022 school year, there are going to be additional demands placed on the system for transporting students in accordance with the safety guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the Georgia Department of Health.  “Of course, we will follow the directives from the CDC and the DPH as it relates to mitigation factors,” Perkins continued.  “Right now, it is critical that we reach as many candidates as possible to bolster our numbers. Our goal with this campaign is to increase the number of drivers on staff so we can meet the needs of our student population.”

The district has purchased 5 billboards, television ads, digital display ads and begun a social media campaign to recruit drivers.  “We offer a competitive salary, outstanding health benefits, participation in the state’s retirement system, and a safe and welcoming environment in which to work.  All our drivers are protected by COVD-19 mitigation practices because we take their health and safety very seriously,” said Tim Burns, Director of Transportation Services.  “This is an important job…what could be more important that making sure our young people get to school and home safely?”
